Changelog

What changed in the calculators, and when. Formula refinements, verification milestones and the data behind every number, each entry dated.

Every figure on this site is dated and sourced, and the math is documented on each tool's page. This log records the changes to that math and those numbers over time. Spot something off? Email fawad@ahmed.fyi.
  1. : Halal section update and new rates

    • Halal funds. Fees, fund sizes and listings checked again, and eight funds added. Corrections: the iShares sukuk fund (SKUK) costs 0.40% and trades in Amsterdam and Zurich, and WSHR costs 0.56%.
    • Zakat. Gold and silver prices as of October 31, 2026. You can now pick the nisab weights: 87.48 g and 612.36 g (Islamic Relief Canada), or 85 g and 595 g (NZF Canada).
    • Halal mortgages. Provider list checked again: three providers added and one removed that does not offer home financing. Providers with no published rates show "on request" and are not ranked.
    • New guide. Your first halal portfolio in Canada shows three example portfolios and what each costs in a TFSA, FHSA or RRSP.
    • Bank of Canada rate. The policy rate is 2.50% and prime is 4.70% after the October 28 decision. The HELOC and provincial student-loan defaults follow prime.
    • 2026 numbers on the homepage. The year's account limits and key rates, each with its date, built from the same data as the calculators.
  2. : Charts & accuracy release

    • New and upgraded charts across the calculators. Bridges show how a result is built from your inputs. Grids show how the answer moves when you change one or two inputs. Meters show where you stand against a limit.
    • Quebec income tax. Quebec tax now applies the deduction for workers (6% of work income, up to $1,450 for 2026). It no longer gives a credit for QPP, EI and QPIP contributions, which Quebec does not allow.
    • Ontario tax on dividends. The Ontario surtax is now calculated before the dividend tax credit, in the same order as form ON428. Top rates on dividends now match the published 39.34% (eligible) and 47.74% (non-eligible).
    • Student loans. The Repayment Assistance Plan uses the income thresholds for August 2026 to July 2027 and the payment formula in the Canada Student Financial Assistance Regulations, for families of 1 to 7 or more people.
    • Savings accounts. A promotional rate stops counting after its last sign-up day. EQ Bank's base rate and its direct-deposit boost now show as two rates.
    • Tax widget. "Total tax + deductions" now includes CPP and EI, the same figure as the income tax calculator.
    • Zakat. The gold and silver hints follow live prices. Wealth exactly at nisab now counts as at nisab.
    • Rounding at the limits. A figure no longer rounds onto the wrong side of a rule. Before, a debt service coverage ratio of 0.97 showed as "1.0×" and a 2.97-month emergency fund showed as "3.0 months".
    • Inputs out of range. A negative balance or a very large value in a shared link is now held to a sensible limit, so no result shows a blank or an impossible number.
    • Personality tools. The colour of each score gauge now agrees with the verdict next to it.
    • Find a tool fast. Press Ctrl+K (⌘K on a Mac) on any page to search all the calculators.
  3. : Accuracy & verification release

    • Automated accuracy suite. The core math of every major calculator is now pinned by worked, hand-checked examples that re-run on every change, so a formula can't drift.
    • Income tax & take-home, verified. Cross-checked against a major Canadian tax calculator across provinces and income levels, and matched to the dollar (e.g. $100,000 in Ontario, take-home $74,206).
    • CPP timing. Now evaluates every start age from 60 to 70 to find the one that maximises your lifetime benefit for a given life expectancy, not just the 60 / 65 / 70 milestones.
    • TFSA room. Contribution room now accrues from the year you turned 18 or became a Canadian resident, whichever is later, so newcomers see the correct number.
    • FHSA & RESP planners. Now separate what you contribute from what the account is projected to grow to, with contribution carry-forward handled correctly.
    • Mortgage amortization. The 30-year amortization option now appears only where it is permitted: insured first-time buyers and newly built homes.
    • Retirement drawdown. Refined CPP/OAS start ages and indexation; the OAS clawback flow is verified against CRA rules.
    • Rental property & rent-vs-buy. Aligned on a single, consistent after-tax basis so the two sides of each comparison are like-for-like.
    • Portfolio outcome ranges. Relabelled so the projected range reads honestly rather than implying a guarantee.
    • Common questions, inline. Every calculator now shows its most-asked questions and answers right on the page.
  4. : Foundations

    • 60 Canadian calculators live. Each with a "How this is calculated" section showing the actual formula and a plain list of what it does not model.
    • Everything dated and sourced. Brackets, limits, premiums and reference rates come from the CRA, CMHC, OSFI, Service Canada, FP Canada and the Bank of Canada, and every figure carries an "as of" date. See the methodology for the full source table.
    • Annual refresh built in. All Canadian data lives in a handful of files, so each January's new brackets and limits land in every tool at once.

How we keep this honest

Corrections are treated as bugs: when a rule, rate or formula is wrong, it's fixed and dated here. Rankings and comparison math never depend on referral commissions (see how this site makes money). And the numbers roll over every January when the CRA and others publish the new year's figures.
